AP Racism

WARNING: If you believe that issues of racism can be solved by dropping the subject, holding hands and singing Kumbaya, please leave now. Go buy the world a Coke.

ap_racism is a place for intelligent, passionate folks to discuss race, race-relations and racism. While our primary focus will be on the US and Canada, we will also give serious attention to international issues.

Any and all musings, theories and published writings are welcome.

HOWEVER, this community will be moderated and the membership WILL BE RESTRICTED to those who accept that:

-Racism (like all "isms") = Prejudice + Power, and, as a corollary, white privilege (among other privileges) exists, is pervasive and is powerful. Race is a social construct which is hierarchical and transmits privilege. As a corollary, whiteness is a social construct that reinforces white supremacy to varying degrees. Therefore, it is not a "stereotype" to say that white people benefit from racism any more than it is a "stereotype" to say that people of color are hurt by racism.

-While all people may be racially prejudiced, when we speak of racism, we refer to institutionalized white racism. Far from a simple semantic issue, this distinction is critical to our understanding of society's racialized divide.

Excellent primers for our discussions can be found in the writings of Cornel West and Tim Wise, among many, MANY others.

Basically, please do not request to join the community if you believe or don't understand any of THIS.

If you find no more than one or two of those squares questionable, then feel free to jump into the fray as well.

Feel free to attack white and other privileges in this space. HOWEVER, we will not become paralyzed by the circularity of questioning privilege, and we will try not to actively antagonize other members.

Personal attacks of other members are strongly discouraged in general.

The moderator does not expect to be hyper-vigilant on this point. When (not if) things become heated, she will not be offended by a little brusqueness or hyperbole, and she asks that you try not to be, either.

What generally constitutes a truly unproductive personal attack?

"That reeks of privilege because of XYZ."
"You probably think that because you are white and, generally, white people yadda yadda."
...and maybe even "You must be living on f*cking Mars if you think racism is not a factor. Don't you understand that blah blah blah?"

NOT Okay

"Why don't you just go f*ck yourself?"
"You are a racist *%&@%$*!!!" (No further explanation.)*
"You think you're so great because of something something. Well, you're not! You're just a $%$@%@%!"

*If someone has violated this community agreement, and the mod has missed the exchange, please bring it to her attention ASAP.

Hey, you! Still want to join? Good for you! Either click to add the community, or contact one of the moderators in her LJ*, subject: AP Racism Join Request. If you made it this far, you'll probably be a shoe-in.

If you find that your application is taking some time to be approved, this is probably for one of the following reasons:

-The moderators have never observed you in other communities or on other journals AND

-None of your friends is a member of ap_racism AND

-You are not a member of any other anti-racist communities (or more than one general or unmoderated race-related community) AND

-None of the recent entries in your LJ nor any of your interests deal with race-related or anti-oppression topics AND

-You have not contacted the moderators in any way.

Please contact one of us if all or most of the above apply to you. In your note, please include your definition of racism and a topic you would like to discuss.

If you do not do this, please do not be surprised if you are not approved.

In the unlikely event that you are denied membership, please do not take it personally. debunkingwhite, anti_racism, transcultural or another community may be a better fit for you.

Now, let's begin!
